One Night in Kiev

Some reflections on a very brief trip to the former soviet Republic of Ukraine

We were on the shortlist to design the very first golf course in Ukraine. We had decided to make our fees very competitive in view of the publicity that might be generated, but once we were there, we decided our fees were not nearly high enough to cover the hassle and discomfort.

The airport was like a mad time-share salesmen's convention but with constant accosting for taxi rides rather than holiday homes.

Soviet roadbuilders share a common heritage with the Romans - the road from the airport into Kiev was absolutely arrow straight (and 8 lanes wide). The drivers also seem to share this Roman heritage - the driving was something like the chariot race from Ben Hur.

According to some of the websites I went onto, Kiev is supposed to be one of Europe's most beautiful cities. It isn't. The centre is fairly average but what is memorable is the mile upon mile of grey soviet-era prefabricated apartment blocks stretching as far as the eye can see in every direction.

I selected the Hotel Khreschatik
from the TripAdvisor top 10 Kiev hotels. It is without doubt the worst hotel I have stayed in anywhere. Heaven only knows what the bottom 10 are like.

I compounded my error by assuming that a junior suite would be the hotel's showcase room. If it was a showcase for post-modern post-soviet interior design irony then it succeeded. The decor and furnishings were various shades of beige. My feet stuck to the carpet. The air-conditioning didn't work and 5 lightbulbs were missing. The hot taps ran cold. I tried the cold taps and they ran hot. The 'mini-bar' was a domestic refridgerator plonked by the entrance door: unplugged and empty.

The access corridors were dirty, dingy and threadbare. There was a chambermaid doing the ironing in the corridor outside my room. The access staircase was completely undecorated: by undecorated I mean no plaster on the walls and bare concrete stairs.

At check-in we were given a breakfast voucher each and told not to lose it: no voucher, no breakfast.

The hotel had no breakfast room (or any other facilities that we could find) and breakfast was taken at a cafe a few doors away. Breakfast consisted of: a strange coloured liquid with an indescribable taste; a mini-croissant; a rubber omelettey-type thing with a lettuce leaf; one cup of coffee (no refills offered, thankfully).

Early the previous evening I had received a telephone call from a nice lady asking me if I wanted 'a relaxing massage and some sex.' I politely declined, saying I was too tired (why, for heavens sake, did I feel the need to make an excuse?).
She said 'what about tomorrow night'.
I said 'OK, come on over.'

I don't know what happened to the occupant of my room the following night: I was on a Georgian Airways flight to Tbilisi at the time.

How to avoid 'Biz Opp' Scams
and find out What Really Makes Money

With so many claims and offers to make you rich overnight, how do you decide which products offer you a genuine opportunity to make money?

I have been a subscriber to the 'What Really Makes Money' Newsletter and 'Biz Opp' Review for a couple of years now and I have been genuinely impressed, not only with the impartial in-depth reviews of the most popular money making products on the market but also with the detailed (and free) money-making business plans that are published in many of the issues.

Nick Laight, the publisher, has been at the sharp end of marketing, publishing and finance for a lot of years now. In 'What Really Makes Money' he goes through the latest opportunities and mailshots with a fine tooth comb. If they don’t live up to their promises, he doesn't pull any punches.

It really is a must-have if you’re looking at investing in any Biz Opp scheme (and if Nick hasn't already reviewed a particular scheme, you can email him to get his opinion).

As well as biz opp reviews, each monthly issue lays out easy-to-follow at-home business blueprints you can set up within days. When you join 'What Really Makes Money', Nick also sends you 7 home businesses that have been proven to make money… currently eBay, ebook publishing, home computer doctor, sales lead brokerage, premium phone service, email service, and domestic cleaning agency - all for absolutely no charge.

And the beauty is that you can review everything, risk-free, just for taking a look at his newsletter.

At the moment he is not only offering to help you set up and run a profitable business from your kitchen table over the next 12 months, he is guaranteeing that if you don't make at least £75k full-time or £15k part-time... you can walk away and pay him absolutely nothing.

Today's vacation destination is near the east coast of Scotland, close to Dundee and the Firth of Tay. It is on the 'doorstep' of the Highlands and within easy travelling distance of St Andrews.

It has on-site golf, fishing, leisure facilities, restaurant, bars and a conference suite for up to 300 delegates.

Accommodation is in five different types of luxury 4* self-catering lodges, ranging in size to accommodate from 2 to 10 persons. Some of the lodges come with their own outdoor saunas and hot tubs.

'The Osprey' 18 hole par 72 parkland course is named after the ospreys that nest and fish in the loch which the course surrounds.

The leisure spa is housed in the largest log constructed building in Scotland and provides a technogym, sauna, swimming pool and therapy room.

Fly fishing for brown and rainbow trout is available on the 40 acre loch and bankside. There is also a children's fishing pool.

The Osprey Centre provides a wealth of information about these magnificent birds, as well as the opportunity to view a nesting pair between March and September.

Jost Van Dyke went out to 3.30 so I didn't lay the bet, which was a shame because the horse was unplaced.

Instead I layed Mr Aitch at 2.50 only to watch it drop to 2.24 and Royal Attraction lengthen to 6.80. This is outside the recommended spread - but, as the bet was on, there was nothing to be done other than cross fingers. In betting circles, finger-crossing is not high on the list of recommended strategies but it worked - Mr Aitch came second and another easy £5 goes into the pot

The Five Lays Rollover Daily Dabble
14 November 2006
This was a much less stressful day as the very first of my picks - Plume d'Oudaries - lost. So no rollover needed and an easy £5 into the treats tin. I was tempted to start a new rollover chain, but this is against the game plan and I resisted.

Todays selection
There are quite a few other races which are borderline, but here are the current picks:
12.30 Southwell: Jost Van Dyke at 2.66 with Cherri Fosfate at 4.90 9 runners
12.40 Warwick: Mr Aitch at 2.62 with Royal Attraction at 5.00 18 runners
13.00 Southwell: Jabbata at 2.66 with Bodden Bay at 4.90 14 runners
13.30 Hexham: Flint River at 2.66 with Balian at 4.40 11 runners
15.50 Hexham: Roc Tredudon at 2.34 with Nortonthorpe Lad at 5.00 8 runners
Did you know that the most successful left-handed golfer in the world, Phil Mickelson, is right-handed in everything else he does?

Non-golf things that I didn't know last week

Patrick McGoohan - of 'Danger Man' and 'The Prisoner' fame - is American (or at least American-born with Irish parents).

He has turned down some of the all-time great parts: 'The Saint' and 'James Bond' - apparently on moral grounds; 'Gandalf' in The Lord of the Rings and 'Dumbledore' in the Harry Potter films, both for health reasons.

Apparently, the last episode of 'The Prisoner' was so controversial that McGoohan and his family had to leave Britain.

The Five Lays Rollover Daily Dabble

Yesterday I had to wait for the 4th race - which was a bit of a buttock clencher - but then Letham Island did the business and came in second (the 1st and 2nd favourites swapped just before starters orders, so I didn't back Little Eskimo - although as neither won, it didn't actually matter). So a crisp £5 in the biscuit barrel.

Todays selection:
12.40 Folkestone: Plume DQudairies at 2.66
13.00 Fakenham: Executive Paddy at 2.36
14.00 Fakenham: Capitalise at 2.28
14.40 Folkestone: Garde Champetre at 1.96
17.50 Wolverhampton: Whazzis at 2.60

I will explain the system once I have got a few more fivers in the biscuit barrel and I am happy that it is a genuinely effective system.

Did you know that the world's longest golf course is the International Golf Club in Massachusetts, which is 8325-yards long with a par of 77?

This is a system for laying bets. Until the bank has built up a bit, I am only going for a daily £5 target. It may not be a lot, but it will cover my latte and panini habit.

There are 5 simple rules, but until I have tested the system for a while I won't be giving out any details. Follow my daily blog to see how I get on, then later you can find out how to join in the fun.

Todays selection:
13.40 Leicester: Ever Special at 2.60
14.00 Southwell: La Colline at 2.68
14.10 Leicester: Pearl King at 1.94
14.30 Southwell: Little Eskimo at 2.00
14.50 Lingfield: Marine Parade at 2.70

Website Links - Avoid the Phishing Trips
SpoofStick is a simple browser extension that helps users detect spoofed (fake) websites. A spoofed website is typically made to look like a well known, branded site (like ebay.com or citibank.com) with a slightly different or confusing URL. The attacker then tries to trick people into going to the spoofed site by sending out fake email messages or posting links in public places - hoping that some percentage of users won't notice the incorrect URL and give away important information. This practice is sometimes known as “phishing".

SpoofStick makes it easier to spot a spoofed website by prominently displaying only the most relevant domain information. It's not a comprehensive solution, but it's a good start.

How to Plan a Successful Golf Vacation

How to Plan a Successful Golf Vacation
in the Home Of Golf

or: where to find all those great golf break venues in Scotland, Ireland, England & Wales that nobody else will tell you about.

THE EASY WAY

Hello, my name is Chris Powell and I am a golfoholic*.
(*from the old Celtic: gol - someone who propels – foho - a small, round projectile - lic – without accuracy or skill).

My day job is golf course design but my secret identity is The Gọlf Break Kid (uniform: plaid plus-fours, a deerstalker hat and raybans).

I am going to introduce you to hundreds and hundreds of gōlf vacation venues throughout Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales (and, eventually, beyond into ‘johnny foreigner’ territory).

Some of the locations are well known but most of them are widely different, 'hidden' venues which offer an extensive choice of ‘accommodation with glf’. Unlike the guides, magazines and package providers, I include all and any type of accommodation, and any type and standard of gỏlf course.

For example: a 5 red star hotel is one form of accommodation; a tent is, arguably, another. Equally, a Par 3 course is as much a gỗlf facility as an Open Championship venue.

I don’t judge, I just give you the details so that you can make an informed choice: it all depends on whatever ‘fluffs your pillow’ or ‘sinks your putt’ or, indeed ‘pitches your tent' or, in the case of the water-based venues, 'floats your boat'.

Did you know that holing out from a bunker is known as a ‘golden ferret’?
An
average ferret’, on the other hand, is a cricketing term for a terrible batsman.

THE HARD WAY

Step 1: "Where to play, where to stay" golf guides
You will find out there are nearly 3,000 golf courses in Great Britain & Ireland.

You will also find some hotels (but they may only be included if they are affiliated to a hotel rating organisation or if they have paid to be in the guide).

You now have separate lists of gðlf courses and hotels.

What you don’t have is any real idea of which of the hotels offer gōlf packages or which of the gōlf courses offer accommodation packages.

You will therefore need to sift through many hundreds of very small print entries to try to find information that isn’t necessarily there.

You will then have to contact any suitable venues direct, or via their websites, to find out what they offer.

I have done this for you
(see THE EASY WAY, above)

Step 2: Go onto the Internet
The internet is a wonderful thing but it is VERY BIG. According to the Netcraft November 2006 Web Server Survey there are 101,435,253 sites on the internet. Their first survey, in August 1995, found 18,957.

Google ‘golf vacation’ and you will find around 17,600,000 sites.
That's quite a lot, so you will need to refine your search a bit:
+ Scotland = 1,610,000 sites
+ Fife = 796,000 sites;
+ St Andrews = 1,160,000 sites

Still quite a few but, undaunted, you may decide to try 'St Andrews' One of the top 10 sites says “Welcome to our selection of Hotels in Scotland that are offering weekend breaks and short breaks in Scotland”. It doesn’t mention ‘gðlf breaks’, so you have to check all of the hotels listed to see what they offer.

Going back to your search, you notice that the entries are tending to become a bit repetitive and often quite irrelevant. Almost anything with “St” or “Andrews” is listed, wherever it is in the world. By entry 1,273 you are now an expert on Volkswagens but your attention is beginning to wander and you may even be experiencing mild hallucinations.

All you really want to find is a simple list of gðlf vacation venues.

I have done this for you (see THE EASY WAY, above)

Step 3: Buy Some Golf Magazines
Spend lots of your hard-earned dollars, yen, pounds, rubles, kroner, renminbi, dinars, pesos, francs, rand, rupees, euros, et cetera on a selection of magazines

You will find some very interesting articles on how to improve your swing/putting/short-game/bunker techniques.

There will be several pages of advertisements. Many of the same advertisements appear in several of the magazines, and in successive editions.

Many of the advertisements are for package providers (see Step 4, below)

Some advertisements will be for individual venues, but probably not very many.

You will then need to contact the venues to find out what they offer (see Steps 1 & 2, above).

I have done this for you (see THE EASY WAY, above)

Step 4: Try Golf Vacation Package Providers
Package providers offer all-inclusive golf trip packages (which is quite good) but generally only to a limited number of well known resorts and hotels (which is not quite so good, especially if you like variety, or something a bit different).

To find some, go on the internet (see Step 2, above)

To find some more, buy some magazines (see Step 3, above)

But what if you don't particularly want to go where the package trips go?

What you really need to help you make a decision is to find a comprehensive and impartial list of the very many venues that provide gồlf holidays or gổlf and accommodation packages or arrange your gỗlf for you at local courses or offer green fee discounts or prepare gộlf itineraries or supply other gớlf-related services.

I have done this for you (see THE EASY WAY, above)

Step 5: Try Some More Research
Spend at least 2 years researching as many sources as you can find.

I have done this for you (see THE EASY WAY, above)

Did you know that Gene Sarazen invented the sand wedge?
